47% of Americans

So this is the break down of those 47% of Americans who do not pay taxes. Most of the people who do not  pay any taxes are the elderly. Is that wrong?

Many of them do not have an income they are living off of their retirement plans and social security. The argument can be made that they actually do pay taxes such as property tax which has been on a steady increase over the years while their incomes are fixed. I believe that the elderly are still paying their weight if not more because their property taxes and sales taxes go towards programs that many of them do not use any more. A majority of the property taxes go to support local school districts and many of the elderly have not had children in schools in a long time.

The issue of taxation is always the scapegoat to point out the unfair nature of american system. It is important to know that it cant always be fair but the system can be examined to make it work better.

How does learning this information make you feel?

Were you surprised to learn this information?

  1. When I found out that 4000 millionaires don't pay an income tax, I was equally upset just as Mitt Romney. Fact remains that Obama has expressed interest in making changes to Social Security and Medicare if we tax the wealthy at a fair rate as their secretary's, but Mitt Romney wants nothing of it! Governing is about compromise, not removing a group from their sights, or demeaning others for their culture or living situations. Democrats are upset with Obama because he's not as far left as we would like, because he remains "cool" to gun owners and war mongers, yet the other side beat him down with manufactured insults and propaganda. It's hard for me to ask myself if Mitt Romney believes that he can't reach out to these voters, because he was behind closed doors where the ordinary citizen of the 47% can't afford to attend. But over the past two decades, Mitt Romney hasn't evolved on the issues, he's flip flopped, posturing himself best in certain situations. I would call it adapting to the political and social make up of the environment that he submerges himself in, and that my friends, is the worst kind of politician. And to answer the above question, reform is needed at the lower levels, but we must be careful to not ask too much or it will lead to an increase in crime and incarceration. Asking millionaires to pay their fair share at the top will lead to less crime and more regulation.

    1. I couldn't agree more. I would much rather have a stubborn president that sticks to his morals and views than someone who's a people pleaser and tries to appease each individual audience to trick them into voting for him.

  2. okay why does the 47% matter? Is this in reference to the comments he made during a dinner? Its interesting that a web page out for truth is making such an issue out of such a misleading statement. If you were a republican canidate and you were asked which group of voters you were trying to appeal to, and you responded with the 53% that pay income tax since the policies you support benefit them the most, (Romney made this statement but mistakenly used "not the 47% who don't pay income" instead of saying "the 53% that do") should it be held over your head as a political point of view? It appears that it was political tactics not personal point of view. Regardless of whether he is supported or not the attacks from such a simple statement taken out of context puts supports of Obama on the same level as the "Romney Attack Ads" We are acting no better than a men we are so eager to criticize. The facts stated before have nothing to do with policy of either candidate. They are simply that, just facts, not bias, opinion, or plan for changes come from either. In fact if you look at the fiscal cliff coming up, taxes are going up and spending is going down. How about writing topics that talk about the candidates plans for dealing with the fiscal cliff and QE3 instead of statements made at fund raising dinners. If these are sincerely the topics that are discussed, reasoning for their discussion should be clear. Anyone can state facts and claim them to be unfiltered. But as I'm sure we all know, statistics are taken in context and what statistics are brought up may be true, but their purpose should be more clear.

    1. Regardless of where and when the comments were made, the fact remains that Romney thinks that 47% of Americans "dependent on the government" & feel that they are "entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it."

Isn't the government's job to help those who are in need? Are we going to cast people out to die? The widely accepted stereotype of those who are unemployed and receiving help from the government is that they sit around all day and do nothing, but this is obviously not the case. While there are always those who will take advantage of the system, a lot of the people who benefit from these programs are those who truly need the help. Soldiers who are suffering from PTSD, single mothers, and people who have been abused often fall into the trap of poverty. And who are we to watch them suffer and do nothing?

Everyone pays some taxes. Sales tax, for example. Those people are not getting off the hook on taxes.

Romney shouldn't be so quick to write off 47% of the nation as automatically voting for Obama. He might be looking at a self-fulfilling prophecy.
